Amigurumi: why knitted toys have won the world again
Little knitted animals with kind bead eyes have taken over social feeds, children’s rooms and collectors’ shelves. They’re called amigurumi — and behind that sweet word is a whole craft. We’ll tell you where they came from, how to choose your hero, and why a hand-knitted toy is worth more than a factory one.
What amigurumi is
The word “amigurumi” comes from Japanese and is made of two parts: ami — “to crochet” and nuigurumi — “stuffed toy”. It means small knitted figures — animals, dolls, characters — crocheted in a spiral with tight stitches so the stuffing never shows.
The signature of the style is its touching proportions: a big head, a small body, round paws. That’s what makes amigurumi so charming you want to hug them. Each toy is made from separate parts and sewn by hand — so no two are ever exactly alike.
Why they’re loved again
The trend for all things handmade brought amigurumi back into the spotlight. In a world with too many things, a warm handmade toy became a small act of care — for a child, a loved one, yourself.
- 🧸 Uniqueness. Your toy exists as a single copy — in the color you choose.
- 💛 Emotion as a gift. A handmade thing holds the warmth and attention of its maker.
- 🌱 Mindfulness. No assembly line — only quality yarn and honest work.
- 🎨 Freedom of choice. Any shade, size and character — all for you.
How to choose your hero
Choosing a toy is about feeling, not a checklist. Still, a few guidelines help you get it right, especially if the toy is a gift.
- For whom. For little ones — large parts and safety eyes; for adults — characterful heroes and collectible sizes.
- Size. Mini (10–15 cm) travel well; big huggables (40–60 cm) become home favorites.
- Color. Match the room or a favorite shade — we have over 80 yarn colors.
- Character. A huggable goose, a fashionista bunny, a little bear — each has a story; pick by mood.
Velour or cotton: which yarn is better
The yarn decides both the look and the feel of a toy. We knit with two favorite materials, each with its own role.
- Plush velour (Dolce). Soft, fluffy, warm to the touch — perfect for huggables and animals. You want to press it to your cheek.
- Cotton (Jeans). Dense and holds its shape — great for neat bags, keychains and toys with crisp details.
If in doubt — for a gift toy velour almost always wins: it looks festive and feels lovely. For accessories and everyday items cotton is more reliable.
How to care for a knitted toy
With gentle care a handmade toy lasts for years and keeps its look. A few simple rules:
- 🧼 Hand-wash in warm water (up to 30°) with a mild detergent, without harsh wringing.
- 💧 Don’t twist — gently blot in a towel and dry flat, away from the heater.
- 🪥 Refresh velour with a soft brush to bring back the fluff.
- ☀️ Keep away from direct sun so the color stays bright.
A toy with soul in it
Amigurumi isn’t about “buying a thing” — it’s a small story that begins with a ball of yarn and ends in a hug. We knit every toy by hand, in your color and with love — and we’ll gladly make a friend just for you. 💛
